Gap when windows are shut, hinge side, is it possible to re-adjust? Post questions and find answers on glazing, double glazing, upvc glazing, conservatory glazing, fixtures and fittings etc....

Hi I have question regarding my bedroom windows.

When I try to close them, they operate OK most of the way but as soon as its about to close, the window becomes resistant and springy, and there's a grindy sound as it's about to close, when fully closed, it sounds and feels as if ive left it open.

There is a visible gap on the hinge side of the window.

I did open my windows all the way out during the summer when it was really hot, could I have bent something out of shape?

Is this something I could diy fix?

Hi m.rassul,
Open the window and check the screws fixing the hinges to the frame and to the casement are tight. Check for debris, clean and Lubricate all the moving parts of the hinges. If this does not correct the problem you will need new hinges. This means removing the casement to fit new hinges, it’s really fiddly and possibly best left to an experienced tradesperson.

Thank you for the response I will check all the joints and screws and make sure its all right.

I don't think I should risk trying to change the hinges myself, it does look like it would be fiddly to do

Hi m.rassul,
If the windows are on the first floor the hinges are best replaced from outside - a double glazed casement is surprisingly heavy.
