Apologies if I use the wrong names for items. The sliding door slides shut. The lever engages the multipoint latching mechanism so the door can’t open, but the lever is free to be unlatched. The key will not turn in the lock to prevent the lever from moving.
Diagnostic: If the door is open the lever cannot move to the up (lock) position. However, if the little interlock button (see image) is pressed the lever will bring out the latches, and the key will turn in the lock to prevent the lever from moving (unlatching).
History: The patio door was fitted by professionals but the lock never worked. They would not come back and fix it. A locksmith came out and turned the latching strip (on the non-moving door frame) upside down and it worked for a couple of years. Now it has stopped working.
It is my Aunt's door, so it is a 15 miles drive to try anything! I tried a little block on the fixed door frame to ensure the little button was pressed in case something was out-of-tolerance there. No success. The lever seems to move up as far with the door open (and button pressed) as with the door closed.
I can't figure out why it won't lock after being latched closed.
