Changing a room light but not sure how to wire

by Shark » Mon Apr 03, 2023 6:04 pm

Hi,
After some advice please.
New ceiling light purchased but not sure how it should be wired.
Photos attached showing existing ceiling rose and the new light. New light has 2 sets of blue wires, 2 black and 1 earth.
I know the lighting circuit so it's not as simple as joining all the wires from the rose.
Thanks

The supply looks like it should be connected to the red and black wires in your new light, but a close up picture would help. (I presume your new light has multiple lights?)

Ceiling rose:
Make sure the red sleeving stays where it is. (On the black wire, don't let it fall off)

The two red wires need to stay connected together, they do NOT connect to anything else.

The black with red sleeving is called switched live, and goes to the Live of your new light.

The plain black wire is neutral and goes to the Neutral of your new light

The earth goes to the earth on your new light.

Most folk now use "wago" connectors to connect the two reds mentioned earlier

You can get a pack of Ten, 3 way wago connectors for £4.28 Click me

And well done you for asking BEFORE you change a light.
Often people ask which wire goes where and all they have is 9 wires poking through a hole in the ceiling

Hi,
Followed the instructions which made perfect sense but.....
After connecting the light all appears ok until the light is switched on and the the power trips.
Other lights work ok (when power back on).
Reconnected the original light which worked fine (even when connecting straight to the choc box).
Does this suggest a fault with the new light?
Thanks again.

Was the power supply already connected or did you connect it? and could you post a close up picture of it, so I can see both ends at the same time. (I did ask in my first post)
