Can I lay limestone tiles directly onto earth indoors

My question is, can I lay stone or ceramic quarry tiles directly to the earth in a similar way to which I have seen in old cottages?
This is in a rear annex kitchen in a Victorian terraceed house.

Hi loopmoth,
Yes you can lay direct on dirt, whether this would result in a good quality floor which will last is debatable. If the dirt is well compacted - so it’s like a concrete surface you may be OK.
