Insulating - Spray Foam in ceiling space?

by Delicate Dave » Thu Nov 30, 2023 4:02 pm

When we bought this house I didn't realise extension work had been done without any attention to insulation. One such work was expanding the front of the property with a tiled roof and front door sort of effort. I have since moved the front door so what we are left is just an extra space in the hall of about 6ft x 6ft.

What we have a problem with the hall it's so cold, even in the summer, we call it the graveyard. Making holes in the ceiling for lights I noticed the wasn't any kind of insulation. All there is between timber & plasterboard to the weather sheet then the tiles is very very cold air.

So how can I insulate without taking the ceiling down? I suppose I could get 100s of cans of spray foam :-) is the a product I can use with my Wagner sprayer I wonder. I don't think it's worth paying more than £100 to get this done hence I've not done anything in 3 year.

Hi delicate Dave,
Stop being so cautious, take a few tiles off the roof, cut through the battens and underslaters felt (if there is any) and stuff in mineral wool insulation. Reverse procedure to make good.

It's the sort of thing I've never thought about doing myself. Although I can do most things, I've just paid over £12k to have the main roof fixed so the thought of paying to fix my mistakes leads me to the assumption that going up rather than down is better :-)

Hi delicate dave,
If you don’t fancy going in through the roof how about fitting an insulated loft hatch in the hall extension, this will give you access to properly insulate.

Good idea. One of the options is to cut a hole just large enough to install the insulation roll and then repair the hole but your idea works just as well.
