Mahogany furniture board has vanished.

by sydh » Thu Dec 07, 2023 5:30 pm

I have some mahogany bookcases, similar to the attached photo, which I wish to add to but dark mahogany seems to have gone out of fashion and apart from some examples in excess of several hundred pounds, there is only Ebay as a possibility.
The alternative is for me to make my own, but even mahogany faced MDF or chipboard has disappeared. I am considering using 19mm ply but then the problem is trying to stain and varnish the wood to the correct shade and finish.
So 2 questions:
Has anyone seen any dark mahogany faced material anywhere, preferably 300mm wide?
Can anyone advise on the best method to turn plywood into dark mahogany?

Hi sydh,
The company that does it all sells oak faced furniture board but you would have to stain it so it looks like mahogany.

Had a look at it but not sure if it is veneer. Could be melamine or whatever is it they use. If I'm doing staining I might as well use high grade ply. Still a lot more work than sourcing mahogany faced wood. Will probably just have to keep searching Ebay for bookcases. Thanks anyway.
