Roof supports

by Nicky80 » Fri Feb 16, 2024 3:00 pm

We are going to insulate and board the loft space. My husband is knowledgeable and built our extension with his builder friend and is sure this is OK but I need to check (I'll be in trouble!). He is certain we are OK to remove the diagonal planks (which will make it much easier to board) and says they are only important while the roof is being built. The main beams are fixed into the brick work and everything else is fine but I don't want to risk invalidating my insurance or anything without checking?

Hi nicky80,
If the roof where the diagonal braces are fitted is tied into another roof for lateral support you should be ok removing the diagonals. If there are gable ends at both ends of the roof with the diagonals it would be unwise to remove them without providing an alternative bracing system
