Drill a 107mm hole in brick wall with a 700W drill

by jacob.sumith » Fri Dec 13, 2024 8:10 pm

I need to drill a107mm hole through brick to fit an exhaust fan. My drill is NOT SDS. I am not sure if it has a clutch. It is a corded one with 680W (bosch psb 680 re). Is it safe to use it for core drilling? I got the following bit and arbour - Erbauer Diamond Core Drill Bit 107mm. The first layer is tile. I have drilled a pilot hole and planing to use it to keep the cut straight
1) Is the drill powerful enough for the cut?
2) Is the drill safe for the cut (it might not have a clutch)
3) What speed should I use, fast or slow?

I went ahead and did it anyway. My Bosch 680W corded drill without a clutch was just fine. I firmly held on to both handles when drilling. Used a medium+ speed to start, by not squeezing the button fully, but selecting fastest speed (and low torque) on the setting. It did bind occasionally but having expecting it, I was prepared to react, by releasing the button while continuing to hold tight. I didn't cut continually for more than 2 mins, taking approx 1 min breaks or until the bits cooled down (warm to touch). The bit was screwed on to the arbour under a coating of PTFE tape and lithium grease. Arbour<-lithium grease<-ptfe<-bit. It was quite easy to undo, while everything was still warm. Took nearly a hour. Had the hammer action turned on accidentally for a bit, but it seemed to have cut more efficiently then. The bike was a tiny bit skewed but the fan fits flush.

The hole was skewed I meant, above. Through out the operation I used all settings, fast & low torque, slow & high torque. I also had to pause when the drill got hot and produced a fruity smell...
