How can I tell the difference between penetrating damp and condensation?
I'm in an end of terrace house and my bedroom has stains on the corner of the two outer walls at ceiling level. I have felt it and it doesn't feel wet and it doesn't look like mould, it's more orangey than black. How can I tell for sure if it is penetrating damp or condensation and what's the best way to deal with it?

Both can be seasonal, condensation will be at its worse during colder months when the structure may be cooler and therefore easier for moisture to condensate upon it. Does it get worse when the weather is bad? We have had a wet summer this year, so has it come on mainly when it is, or has rained? Are there rainwater fittings on the opposite side of the wall? Is there a leaking gutter / flashing etc?

It is a process of elimination and could take some time to diagnose correctly.
