central heating TVR valve

On the TVR thermostat radiator valves is it possible to just replace the top half to save draiing the system to replace the whole issue. The reason is I am not sure the top half is working properly in sensing cold air and activating the valve. And to remove the top half I assume this is acheived by undoing the nut directly under the top section of the TVR valve [the white bit with temp level numbers]. Can any TVR thermostat head be used or must I use like for like? OR, which will be a bugger, have to drain down and replace the whole valve.

Well, I guess it depends on what is wrong with the valves. Certainly you remove the head as you suggested, and a trip to various plumbers merchants should find a replacement. Each manufacturer is different.

When you remove the head, a centre pin is visible. This pin often sticks and jams the valve in one position. Often it can be released by tapping gently.

You should be able to get replacement thermostatic heads, they have to be the same make and model.

TVR is a make of car - TRV = Thermostatic Radiator Valves

Thanks to both for your repllies

I spotted the mistake as I hit the button had a look at the cars and put one on my 'Wish list'.

[size=18][b]Another question which my daughter has just asked me.[/b][/size]

Her rads have the standard manual valves one rad is quite hot. I've heard about 'Balancing' rads. How can the temp be reduced? Would closing the valve [in stages ] the opposite end to the control valve help reduce temp.
