Wooden battens for fixing things to plasterboard walls General problems, solutions, information and advice on fixing to walls of all kinds

My house's walls are mainly plasterboard and I have several heavy items to hang e.g. large TV and coat rack etc

I'm worried that anchor screws might not be enough. Is there a way of knowing if an item will be too heavy?

If it means creating a wooden batten to provide additional strength can someone let me know in detail how I do this please?

Hollow wall anchors are quite good, but if you really want it done right.
Measure out on wall where intend to put brackets etc up. You'll want some timber, stud wall normally 75mm x 45mm approx. cut plasterboard out in area marked out for brackets etc.. Measure length between stud up rights normally 600mm centres but some older house different. cut timber to length slide it in and screw firmly to uprights. Then you will need to board and plaster patch.

Think you would be surprised at just how much weight plasterboard can carry when using the correct anchors without battens - kitchen wall cabinets and large radiators full of water.
