tiling over bathroom tiles for second time! Advice and information on tiling and fixing tiles to a variety of surfaces

We are in the process of completing renovating our bathroom. Started taking off the tiles around the bath to find the previous owner had already tiled over existing tiles. The original layer looks like they've been there for many many years. So our question is whether we can tile over the old tiles for a second time (its going to take a bit of work getting all the old adhesive off and we don't think the original layer of tiles look like they're well bonded to the wall as some have started coming away once we took the most recent layer off) or just take both layers down and start from scratch? (our bathroom small and would only be one wall that we're re-tiling)

Think you may have answered your own question. It may be easier to fetch both layers off than just one.

Personally I only tile over old ones if a, the little blighter's won't come off or b, if it's a quick cheap job.

If you want a good job, do it properly.

take all tiles of dont tile on loose tiles
what type of walls do you have solid or a stud wall
if its a stud wall then i would take the plaster boards off nail new boards back in there place and then you have a new surface to work on,you dont need to skimm over the boards as its better to tile direct to the boards plaster boards can take 52kg per square meter were if you plaster over the boards the weight drops to 32 kg which means the plaster boards can take bigger tiles if unplastered
if a solid wall then take all tiles of and get it replastered ready for the tiles
