Air brick in a house with concrete floors

by stevenalvey » Thu Nov 15, 2007 6:24 pm

I have recently moved house, and my living room contains an air brick with a ghastly looking vent inside. It looks like something you would expect to find in a period property but the house is only 13 years old. Although the cooler months are upon us, the living feels very cold and the air vent on the inside is ice cold. I am not sure if this was put in because of the style of gas fire that was originally fitted when new, but this has since been replaced with a more modern one in the last 12 months. I wondered if i should brick it up, or is there another option to reduce this cold air flow entering the house

It depends on the type of gas appliances in the room, some require purpose made ventilation.

If it's a Back boiler or a fire with a heat input of over 7kw then it definately will need this ventilation. Check manufacturers instructions.

The original fire was replaced with a newer one. The new one has a maximum output of 6Kw. Does this mean that it is safe to block up?

Check Manufacturers Instructions which will tell you what if any ventilation is reqd, or get someone who is CORGI registered to confirm the requirement
