drilling into interior concrete wall General problems, solutions, information and advice on fixing to walls of all kinds

i am having major problems drilling holes into interior walls in my 1930's house. every time i drill a hole the wall seems to explode and i end up with a large hole too big for the plug and screw.... and i don't mean just slightly too big !!
In addition to this, the surrounding plaster and paint then cracks and falls away.
Please help as a simple job has become a nightmare !!

Sounds as if you are forcing everything too much with most likely a blunt drill bit.

Get a decent sharp drill bit, turn the hammer off, and take your time. Don't drill for more than about 10 seconds without allowing the tip to cool (dip in water if necessary) otherwise, the carbide overheats and goes soft - end of drill bit!

I do most of my masonry drilling (for screws that is) with a cordless non hammer drill. Rarely have a problem if the bit is up to scratch!
