I have a large built in melamine cupboard that I was hoping to paint. I had bought a specialist primer to use, but got home yesterday to find my father in law has painted it with a coat of emulsion. Can anyone tell me what will happen if I paint over this coat in, say, satinwood. Or will I have to try and remove the emulsion and apply the primer?

try scatching the emulsion to see if it comes off easily ? I expect trying to remove the emulsion would be a bit of a job , I would be tempted to risk painting over it with the satinwood , see if you are offered some allternative advise.

you would be better getting the emulsion off and putting a primer like zinnser on unit. over time the emulsion will crack and show through the satinwood especially if knocked you'll end up with patches flaking away. you've gone to the trouble of buying satinwood which is not cheap i know, you will also get a better finish with proper primer/sealer. it will be a damn sight easier (although time consuming and annoying) to get the emulsion off now rather than trying when you've applied satinwood.
