Complicated light switch

by eazyone » Wed Apr 11, 2007 12:06 pm

Hi, I have just bought a house and the wiring needs re-doing. I have managed to change all switches except for one. Its for the upstairs hall way. I opened the switch and saw there are quite a few wires. There are 2 earth, and 2 sets of black and red wires, each wire consisting of 4 or 5 wires coming out of it. What type of switch would I need or would I use a junction box to connect the wires and the then connect another wire for the light switch?

Hope this make sense.

not v. clear do you mean 4/5 strands in each red/black core?
as u say 2 earths 2 reds, 2 blacks, this sounds like a two gang switch(double)?
if so then one red+it's black go to one switch, & same to other, (the blacks should be sleeved with red or taped red as they are switch wires not neutrals, if single switch how many terms has it
IE could be an intermediate switch with 4 terms check carefully & reply b4 attempting to change,
