Freezing cold bathroom!! Information, help, tips and advice on cavity walls, ceilings and lofts etc....

I've just recently bought a victorian conversion basement flat and the bathroom (which Is a single skin walled extension) is absolutley freezing!! Due to the bathroom being 1/2 underground there is no way of insulating it from the outside (I presume) so any insulation needs to be done from the inside. It has a flat roof (which I've been told makes it colder??) It's not a huge bathroom so I can't afford too lose too much space - does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can insulate this bathroom and make it warmer? (Or am I condemed to a future of freezing by butt off first thing every morning!!) Any advice would be much appreciated!

A relative of mine once redecorated her living room with aluminium-foil underlay, to seal damp in her stone-built home. It worked.
At the same time, thin underlay made of expanded polystyrene, was available, but that can dent permanently.
If you check with your local builders merchant's, you will find out if polystyrene-backed plasterboard is still available. If so replace your present lath & plaster, or plain plasterboard with this type. Even aluminium-backed type is better than basic.

If there is no insulation in the roof void, it will account for something like 25% of the overall heat loss.
