Discharge lights, motors, etc. will caused a shift from unity but in the main any correction on a small scale is done within the unit. So within the home unlikely to affect us. Although on an experiment with florescence lamps removing the capacitor could change power use from 66 watt to 132 watt and this was for a 60 watt unit. As you can see even with the capacitor it was using over the ratted value. For 25 units it was using 2.2Kw instead of 1.5Kw all because it was slightly over voltage. Using HF (High Frequency) units will cure this problem plus prevent stroboscopic effect make tubes last longer and retain there light output longer. But how many florescence units do we use in the home. Cathode ray tubes also use a lot of power and LCD units must be a big saving. Where there is some warm-up or inrush i.e. TV's one has to be careful not to switch off for short time as it uses more to restart than is saved by switching off.
