I have a very old cottage and am hoping to replace the flooring in the living room. It currently has a rather nasty wood floor in part of the room and carpet in the other, the current wood has not lifted so far.
I would love to have wooden floors throughout but I am unsure how to go about laying them as I have had quite a lot of conflicting advice. The ceilings are very low and so the thickness of the product I choose is very important.
I am thinking about laying some ply which I would paint with some damp proofing liquid. I would then attach the new floor to battens to allow some air to circulate. The problem with this is that it would raise the floor level a lot and I am worried about creating a rising damp problem. The cottage has given a very high reading on the damp metre. The sub floor is currently a mix of the original timber and concrete.
I would appreciate any advice on this subject as I am truly confused.
