Tiling on to plywood? Advice and information on tiling and fixing tiles to a variety of surfaces

I've just read numerous plywood related tiling posts, and still i'm a bit confused, hence this post.

Simple question.

Can I tile directly on to 12mm plywood?

Can I also point out, that the area of plywood is about 11inches square, covering an old airvent hole, and will also have an electric extractor fan covering most of the centre, so i'm really only tiling round the edges.

Yes but prime it with an acrylic primer first.

i coated the 12 inch square ply with PVC.

then tiled over it.
