I have recently moved house and all the doors, skirtings and w9indow frames are stained a dark mahogany colour. I want to change them all to a lighter tone -pine or light oak. What is the best way to do this? I read on another posting to scrape the stain off but that would take forever. Can I sand the stain off or do i need to replace all the wood? Any help or advice would be much appreciated please,
I HAD SAME PROBLEM WITH STAIR HANDRAIL HAVING A DARK STAIN COLOURING,TRIED SANDING BUT NO USE,STAIN SOAKS INTO THE WOOD UNLIKE PAINT WHICH SITS ON TOP SO IT CAN'T BE SANDED DOWN.I REPLACED THE HAND RAIL.
Been there and done it on three large windows in my place.
Took forever. I dismantled the windows surrounds and used a belt sander to get all the stain/varnish off. In all honesty it would have been faster and cheaper just buying the wood and doing them from scratch.
I also had to do the actual window frames too which was a major bind.
