Lockshield valve or raditor drain off valve? All aspects of plumbing questions and answers, help, tips and information

I am just about to replace the radiator in my kitchen and while looking into the parts required got a bit stumped when it came to choosing the valves.

I know I need a TRV but what about the other end? Should I choose a lockshield valve or will an ordinary radiator valve with drain off be sufficient?

Hi bucksfella,

Use a locksheld, once the Reds have been balanced correctly there is no further need to adjust this valve, whereas a ‘wheel-head valve’ can be adjusted by ‘board fingers’. You only need to fit a ‘drain valve’ on the lowest past of the CH system, or if the pipes feeding the Rad drop down from the floor above and then loop back up, then fit a drain valve as you would have no other way of draining this part of the system.
