Felt dressing into guttering problem

by thinkwallet » Sun May 04, 2008 10:17 am

The end of the felt that dresses into my gutters from the underside of a pitched red clay tiled roof has worn/rotted away in a few places, and in these places the tiles don't quite project far enough to drip water into the gutter. Rain water runs down the fascia board instead of into the gutter. (roof overhangs walls by about 450mm)

What are the options to remedy this?

I don't need a new roof, it's in good shape apart from this problem.

Thanks, Neil.

CHANCES ARE THAT THE LAST LAYER OF SARKING FELT IS DETERIORATING AND SHOULD BE REPLACED, THIS DOES MEAN REMOVAL OF SOME TILES IS NECERSSARY.

REMOVE SUFFICIENT COURSES (UP TO 4-COURSES DEPENDING ON TILE TYPE AND OVERLAP USED) OF TILES AND THE ASSOCIATED BATTENS AND REMOVE LAST LAYER OF OLD FELT.

IF FELT ISN'T IN TOO BAD A CONDITION UP UNDERNEATH THE TILES, THEN YOU COULD GET AWAY WITH REPLACING HALF THE DEPTH OF THE FELT AND ONLY HAVE TO REMOVE SUFFICIENT BATTENS AND TILE COURSES TO ACHIEVE THIS(2 COURSES MAYBE).

EITHER WAY, REPLACE FELT AND ENSURE IT GOES UNDERNEATH ABOVE LAYER AND OVERHANGS INTO GUTTERING AND REPLACE BATTENS AND TILES.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT,

ALDA.
