Roof Braces

by moggy » Mon Apr 07, 2008 4:23 pm

I want to use my loft space but am fed up having to keep ducking under the roof braces, there are 3 of them across the width of the loft with another support from the top of the roof space to the floor connecting with the cross members, can I remove these braces and would I need any other kind of roof support :(

WHAT YOU DO NEED, IS THE ADVICE OF A STRUCTURAL ENGINEER!!!

if you remove them there is a good chance that your house will fall down.

there are ways of doing it but it requires very careful calculations. usually using steels across the floor to hold the roof together.

as alda says, get in an engineer, for heaven's sake don't try and take them out yourself!

If you have to 'duck under them' they obviously run from the front roof slope to the rear. These are likely to be the collars. They ties the roof slopes together to prevent lateral movement.
