Am trying to install new toilet . unfortunately the flexible pan connector
i have bought leaves the cistern too far fom the wall. The simple solution would seem to be to cut off about half of the soil pipe protruding through the wall leaving about 2 inches remaining is this areasonable solution and if so what is the best tool to use to cut the soil pipe

What is the soil pipe made of? Cast Iron will need an angle grinder, Plastic just a Hacksaw but if it is asbestos LEAVE WELL ALONE!!!

You could also 'batten out the cistern' from the wall depending on by how much

why don't you buy the correct pan connector for the application. they cost a few quid and saves you butchering the soil pipe and bodging the job.

As rosebery says - change the type of connector you're using.
The flexible pan connectors are quite bulky when not extended.
