Gas Fire and surround

by hippomania » Sat May 31, 2008 7:31 pm

Hi,

Have just bought a new gas fire & surround and was thinking of putting the surround up ourselves, however am unsure of whether this is advisable and also what needs to be fitted first - fire or the surround?

Surround is Jurastone, so if it can be fitted by ourselves what is best product to use to fix it to the wall as obviously I don't want it falling off!!

Your advice is appreciated

It depends on what you have at tghe moment, if swapping a like for like fire putting surround up first shouldn't be a problem.

If catchment space needs altering or flue liner needs to come out, putting the surround and back panel up first makes it awkward to work. If you're fitting a marble back panel then it needs to be sealed properly to prevent any fumes escaping up the back and coming back into the room.

Is there any specific sealants needed to fix surround to wall or can i just use no nails or a product like that? or would it be better to get a proffesional in to do the job?
cheers
