painting over varnished bannisters

can anyone advise me of the best way to use white gloss paint over varnished[dark brown colour]bannister and spindles without stripping them[very long job]?
could liquid sander be used and what type of undercoat?

You should only need to remove the sheen of the varnish so a thorough sand down will be a good start.

You'll then want to use a good quality undercoat. You may need 2 coats of this to hide the dark varnish below before finishing with your top coat, possibly 2.
