Noisy drainage! Drainage and wastage systems and plumbing help, advice and answers

Hi,

our grey water (sinks etc) drains into what is basically an open drain (which is part of the mains drainage and has the appropriate trap system before reaching the foul water system).

at present the down pipe ends about half a foot from the surface of the previously drained water and so when a sink is drained there is a loud sloshing noise.

will it work if i extend the bottom of the down pipe to bellow the surface of the water?

If not, any other suggestions to stop the noise?

If you extend the pipe below the level of water in the drain it will very probably cause an airlock in the waste pipes from your sink etc. This will reduce the speed of flow.

Try lengthening the pipe so it is close to the water but not actually in it. Also, direct the flow towards the side of the drain which may reduce the splashing noise.
