Want to be a Carpenter

by wannabe2 » Sat Jun 21, 2008 12:12 pm

I am looking for some career advice from the carpenters out there. I am due to retire next year, having done 30 years in the police. I will be 50 and want to remain active and so I want to retrain for a career in the building trade and feel that carpentry would be right for me. I consider myself a competent DIYer.
I have done a couple of ‘intensive’ courses in bricklaying and plastering, but I have a keen interest in joinery/carpentry.
My questions are these: Would I benefit from doing a basic City and Guilds carpentry course at a college? OR
Should I try and work for a general builder and soak up a few of the different building skills? OR
Should I try and get a job straight away with a good general carpenter, and not bother with the college course?

Your thoughts would be most welcome.
