Dimmer switch not dimming properly

by diygaz » Thu Jul 17, 2008 2:42 pm

Few months ago installed a brand new dimmer switch which worked perfectly up until recently
The dimmer would dim the light variably as it is supposed to do until recently, if the dimmer switch is on full then the light will be on full brightness but as soon as you turn the dimmer down the faintest of touches the light starts to flicker then will go off as apposed to dimming down.
Has anybody any ideas what the problem could be.
The dimmer switch is rated as 400w max and i am just using an ordinary bayonet fitting lightbulb 60w rating

Throw the switch away and buy a new one!

Sorry to say most likely the dimmer has blown but before you give up try a different make of light bulb. Light bulbs have a coiled coil element so there is some inductance and some capacitance and some times it reacts with the dimmer causing odd effects. It is rare with modern dimmers but worth a try.

All best Eric

Hi dimmer for 400 watts will have a minimum rating as well which may be more than 60Watts, try 100watt lamp to prove it
