I am doing this the right way?

by ps09844 » Mon Aug 25, 2008 10:12 am

Please advise me;

I am soundproofing my living room myself, noisey neighbour problem.

I have build the stud wall, 2" away from the adjoining wall.

I have purchased accoustic mineral wool. The problem I have is; do I put the wool between the 2" gap i have created, between the main wall and the stud wall, or do I just put it between the batons of the stud wall I have created.

What will give a better effect. I have enough wool to fit inbetween the gap and inbetween the studs.

Thanks.

I await your replies as I am ready for this next phase of my DIY project.

The mere fact that you are installing another wall between you and next door will make a difference.
Providing you seal any holes in the existing wall and in the new wall it will make a difference to airborne noise.
Place the wool inside the frame, leave a gap between it and the existing wall.

Just to let you all know, just in case your doing the project, how I got on.

I built my stud wall approximately 1" away from the adjoining wall.

Stuffed it with 25mm accoustic insulation.

Stuffed more insulation between the joists themselves.

12.5mm normal plasterboard.

skimmed over the plasterboard.

Can't hear a thing from next door at all now.

Building the stud wall also gave me the opportunity the hide all wiring for electrics, wall lights, which hides all cables for my flat screen TV's to sit pretty with no wires hanging anywhere.

Hope this helps anybody else with neighbour noise.

Regards.

Thanks for your tips and review ps09844

Can I ask what specific product you used for the 25mm Acoustic Insulation?

Thanks,
Chris
