when my boiler has heated the water or heating to the required temp it obviously cuts out until required again but as it does so it sounds like an airplane coming into land ie very noisy.
can anybody help please

Have you tried turning off the landing light? Oops, sorry.

What type of boiler is it? Combi? Is this a new problem? Is it water boiling or a mechanical sound?

May be kettling - build up of limescale in the heat exchanger and primaries (if older system), noise reducer or descaler can be added to the system.

Thanks it is a fairly old system not a combi.
where would I add the descaler or noise reducer?

Tie up the ball cock up over your small tank - to stop more water going in.
Drain some water out the system - a drain off point or rad.
Add product to tank put CH on for a while then untie ball cock arm.
Voila!

I wander if anyone would be good enough to give me some advice.

I got a quote for a new central heating system for a 2 storey, 3 bedroom house, can I ask your opinion and do you think that sounds like a decent price? and is the brands used for radiators and boiler ok?
