fixing things to walls

i'm about to attach some storage into my garage and i want to fix it to the walls what is the best way to locate the supporting studs behind the plasterboard walls please.

Use a stud detector as shown in the link below.

Otherwise you need to rely on tapping the surface for different sounds which at best is a shot in the dark, or making a series of holes until you find the studs. Filling these holes, however small, always ends up costing more than the stud detector especially when you considerr the time involved.
