Crumbling plaster when drilling General problems, solutions, information and advice on fixing to walls of all kinds

I'm trying to fix a hat/coat stand to wall however when drilling, the plaster is crumbling away from around the drill as the drill bit is not gripping into the blockwork and is moving causing the drill bit to move too much into surrounding plaster. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
