Fitting a chandelier??

by jimelectric » Thu Oct 30, 2008 9:58 am

I have an 'old' chandelier which came from France(I think).
I have a standard ceiling fitting with Black, Red and a Green&yellow wire.
The chandelier is metal and has the following wires; Blue, Brown and Green&yellow, plus another green/yellow wire fixed to the metal frame.
Can you please tell me how I wire this safely?
Cheers,
Jim.

On a normal ceiling rose there are 4 connections.
All earth wires normally go to a clamp.
The Live wires are split into three sections.
Three ways at one end with have neutrals black or blue wires.
In centre three line wires these do not connect to lamp.
Other end two way block this should have a red or brown wire which connects to brown on your new lamp but often it is a black or blue wire with one hopes a red or brown sleeve but often these sleeves are missing be very careful to mark this wire it is called the switch wire and causes no end of problems when it gets mixed up with the others. I would put tape on it to ensure you don't get it mixed up.
Does this answer question?
I would favour leaving rose in place.

Eric,
Thanks.
I have a black, red and green/yellow coming from the ceiling.
I can not use a ceiling rose as the chandelier has to hang from a hook!

I have been told;
"You must ensure that all the green and yellow wires are all connected together. The black and blue wires go together and the red and brown wires go together. It's essential that the whole thing is earthed using the green and yellow wires."

Do I connect the g/y wire connected to the frame of the chandelier to the g/y wire coming from the ceiling? Then, where do I earth them to as I can not use the ceiling rose?
Jim.
