3mm or 6mm plywood for floorboard covering Help, advice, information, answers and tips on all types of flooring from laminate and carpet to timber and vinyl

I asked my builder to put some plywood on my floorboards and he went ahead and put down 3mm plywood.

Somebody then said he should have used 6mm plywood because of the extra soundproofing it gives.

Can anyone advise on this ?

dont think it makes that much difference, in loft conversions we lay fibre glass to do same job, noise will still transmit through even at 18mm,

The main difference between 3mm and 6mm ply is that if the floor was uneven to start with the 3mm ply will tend to follow the curves of the subfloor more than the 6mm soundproofing is not an issue with either as both will transmit sound. so if your floor is now flat you are ok if not you may have to have another layer of 6mm put on top or lift 3mm and replace with 6mm
