Are there different types of central heating programers?
Mine does "water only" or "water and heating".

Can some do "heating only" also?

If yes, can I just replace the programmer?

Is that what 2 channel means - one for water and one for heating?

Any help or explaination is appreciated.

That is exactly what two channel means - effectively two independent timers.

Can you fit one? Well yes, but as you have not said what type of system you have, it's a guess whether it would work properly. By you description of the timer, it would probably just pump cold water around the rads if heating only was selected.

If you fit one, the timer for the hw must be on the same time as the heating.

You have a gravity hot water system, you cannot have the Central Heating on without the heating the water.

It's not just a case of changing the programmer. You will have to add a cylinder/tank stat and 3 port valve. Not as easy as it sounds.
