i have two ceiling lights and two wall switches. when I take off one of the switches and cap the wires the lights then do not work with just the one light switch. I realise i am breaking the circuit by taking one switch out but how do i isolate one switch and still have lights working.

To make both lights work on one sw.
when there were 2 switches there was probably 1 feed in which looped to C. of both sw. & 2 switch lines going 1 to each light, possibly by 3 core cable ie Red looped in & yellow + blue out, one of which you cut off?
you need to put both out going cores in to L1 of sw.
