Water too hot!! All aspects of plumbing questions and answers, help, tips and information

Help needed..with have 2 young children and the hot water is scalding hot and we can't seem to turn it down.
Moved into house only Aug 08 and the water has always been very hot.
So far we have replaced the "clip on" thermostat on the outside on the water tank. This has not solved the problem. We are now thinking of changing the Immersion Heater that is in the water tank??

Other points to mention. The boiler is only 12 months old and the radiators work fine. Do you think we might be heating the water by the boiler and the immersion as the immersion switch in the airing cupboard is alway on? If so, wouldn't the thermostat stop the water being heated when reaching the correct temp?

Turn the immersion off immediately, probably a faulty thermostat on the element.... not the cylinder thermostat.

You dont need to heat by both anyway, especially when your boiler in on for CH.... I never use my immersion, but its a backup and/or for summer use.

Personally I would also check the that the water in the loft tank is cold and that it hasnt boiled up into there as well.

Thanks for the reply. Read the article. The immersion heater is OFF.

The water is cooling down. The tank in the loft is cold. So all ok there.

The immersion is only used for emergency heating or in the summer when the boiler is off. If you are ok with electrics, with the power off, remove the immersion cover and you will see a dial with a temp scale. A screwdriver slot in the middle allows you to adjust the water temp.

Thanks Nitro...I kept searching until I found it...it did take a while, but I remembered it happening, so it helped using some key words.


Plumbbob - Thanks... my hubby has removed the cover and change the immersion rod with temp on it. However, we've turned it off now. Prob use in summer when heating off.
