We have just had an extension which means we need new carpets in all of our bedrooms and hall, stairs and landing. The carpet fitter is booked for Monday (22 Dec) and we had thought we needed to gloss the woodwork first to stop fluff sticking to the skirting boards.

Some people have said we should do it the other way round - get the carpets laid and then gloss.

The skirting is all brand new and pre-primed mdf. We need to start painting asap if we're going to do it as we aim to have it all finished by Saturday to give it more than 24 hours to dry.

Any advice/experiences please?

Sounds like its personal preference, but in the past I have opted to paint the skirting boards first and then touch up anu scuffs etc once the carpet has been fitted... this way you will find it easier to get a clean line between the carpet and the bottom of the skirting board.

The alternatives aren't great in my opinion. Rolling back a newly fitted carpet isn't a great idea... nor is masking and painting up to a new carpet... theres always some that evades the masking! :?
