Dimmer switch help

by Bone. » Mon Dec 29, 2008 2:59 pm

we had a problem with the wall lights in our lounge and it burnt the dimmer switch out (infrared) i have replaced the wall lights and the dimmer switch and the wall lights work fine but the main ceiling light won't stay switched off, it dims and brightens fine but when turned off it comes back on after a sec or 2, any ideas?
hope that makes sense

Hi, you don't say if shared dimmer for both sets of lights or double dimmer, one for each.
But either way it is likely the dimmer is overrated for its load, most have an adjuster screw on the back where you can set the minimum dim.
Add up the total wattage on the dimmer and ensure that it is within its range, less than 250W use 250W dimmer not one rated for up to 400W as this will not dim totally with only a couple of hundred Watts load.
A case where bigger ain't better!
