I want to install a solid oak floor on top of good quality floor boards. The room is a lounge on the first floor of our converted barn. We are therefore concerned about noise transmission around the house. Most underlays seem to be for floating laminate or engineered wood floors. Can anyone recomend some suitable underlay that will give is sound insulation, if possible giving ratings for alternatives?
^^ be careful which you buy though as you will end up with too much give. I find a cheap thin carpet underlay (that you probably wouldnt want for a carpet!) is pretty good for this, and saves on the well overpriced wood floor/laminate underlays.
Remember noise is still going to be transmitted via nails down through the existing floorboards anyway and glue down installation is a problem with u/lay
