Two days ago the water mains to out whole street and apartment building was turned off for a number of hours. However now that the water is turned back on all i can get is water from the cold tap in the kitchen. The mix tap and shower in the bathroom are totally dry and so is the hot side of the kitchen tap.

Does this mean that the hot water tank in the closet is empty?

If so, how do i get it to fill up again?

It should by rights fill up on its own. The logical thought is some debris from the street works has entered your system and become jammed in the ball valve blocking it. The valve needs to be dismantled to remove the blockage.

Hi,

Go in the loft and check the level and ball cock for correct operation.
If the tank has water in then it could be airlocked-- back feed cold mains up the hot pipe to force out.

the ball float might also be caught closed on the side of the tank. Seen it before.
