fixing into lather and plaster!? General problems, solutions, information and advice on fixing to walls of all kinds

as some of you may agree, its absolute nightmare to fix into lathe and plaster!it crumbles every time i fix into it!
my house is about 150 years old. I'm trying to put some shelves up in my bedroom and its prooving to a bit of a pain in my bum. its an interior wall and i don't know whether there is blockwork behind it, and if there is, what fixings do i use? or should i look for the studs and fix into them? any suggestions would be much appreciated!thanks!

Normaly this type of intermal wall is wooden battens then lathe and plastered both sides so there would be no block work.
