I have a large upvc window with a small upvc window above (which opens). I would like to remove the larger upvc window and the wall beneath it, and put in french doors of the same width (4ft) - (opening into a back yard).
I would like to leave the small window in place and fit the door under it- since the room needs as much light as possible.
Would this be a possibility or would I have to buy purpose built french doors with a window on the top?

Yes this can be done,but the glass in the fanlight you leave in will have to be toughend.I would buy the french doors and fanlight all in one because it wont cost much more.Hope this helps.

I doubt that the glass in the fan light would have to be changed.

If it is above the door then it will be OK as normal glass. It's only glass that is within a door or within 300mm of the door (if in a side window) and that is within 1500mm of the finished floor level.
