Hi just about to fit a new close coupled wc in new bathroom .Had a bit of a night mare tiling uneven walls now there is about a 12mm gap betweem cistern and tiled wall.
Would it be possible to tilt cistern back slightly trim the doughnut washer and put very thick bead of silicon around hole in pan and possibly a couple of rubber wedges or similar before tightening up to try and lose this gap or am I asking for trouble?.
Would appreciate any advice ,thanks.

Sounds a bit messy.

Think it would be wiser and safer to put a thin (12mm you say) fillet of timber between the cistern and the wall before you put the screws through, making sure you don't try to overtighten it to the wall. If you want to prevent excessive "wobble" of the cistern, you could put large dollops of silicon (cheap sanitaryware such as no nonsense from screwfix) which will glue it yet allow for some movement. Don't use no-nails or anything that will become dead solid. If you ever did need to remove the cistern in years to come, a blade of some description could be slid behind to slice through and only requires a little top up of silicon to reform the joints when cistern is refilled.

As for the visible gap between the wall and cistern, pack this with tissues and use masking tape while you fill with silicon, smoothing off with a wet tool (finger in surgical glove). The only problem with doing this will be if you need to remove the lid at some point, but again silicon could be sliced off and reformed afterwards.

Sounds like a lot of mucking about I know, but I tend to find that the doughnut washer can be temperamental at the best of times and muck around with this at your peril!!

Thanks swidders for taking time to respond,forgot to say there are no fixing holes in the cistern just fits straight onto pan think will try and tilt it back and wedge to start and if it doesnt work will most probably silicon top of cistern like you said,thanks again,

At the risk of sounding horribly smug the lesson here is straighten uneven walls before tiling.

By the sound of it you won't be able to tilt the cistern back (and you shouldn't anyway) without tilting the whole toilet - bad idea as you'll get very uneven loads on the porcelain. Wait for the sharp crack when you last expect it!

Can you get the whole toilet closer to the wall? Using a shorter pan connector perhaps?
