Have hot water but no cold water?? All aspects of plumbing questions and answers, help, tips and information

I turned off the water supply untder the sink in the kitchen before going on holiday, when I returned I turned the water back on, after a few splutters the water came back on fine. Next day cleaned teeth with water from tap in bathroom, flushed toilet wich re filled, filled kettle with water from kitchen cold tap all with no problem. On returning from work today I have no Cold water from the kitchen tap, the bathroom sink, or the toilet, i do however have cold water from the bath tap and hot water from every tap? Any ideas guys?

Air in the pipes? Trying to work out how to clear it! Maybe you could try connecting the bath and bathroom sink cold water taps together with a hosepipe. Then turn on the kitchen cold tap, followed by the bathroom sink tap and finally the bath cold tap. When (if) water flows freely out of the kitchen tap, turn off the taps in the order bath, bathroom sink, kitchen.

Yes, the bathroom taps will be fed from the tank in the loft via the cylinder.
It seems to me that the mains stop tap washer has stuck shut.
Depending on your skill level - get a Plumber in.

Check the water level in the cold water storage tank in the loft. As Steve says, the bath tap may be fed from this. If the level is well below normal then the problem may be the mains stop tap. However, I suspect that if the bath cold tap was fed from this tank, the bathroom sink would be as well. Basically, you need to check how each tap that isn't working is fed. If Steve is right, it won't be long before the taps that do work give up as well due to the cold water tank emptying (including the hot taps).
