when you replace a damaged slate a tingle,or slate tie as they are called now is nailed to the batton below the slate then bent over the new slate to hold it in place, there made of copper or lead.

tingles are not nailed to the battens, they slot in the join of 2 butting slates and then the next row of slates above are held down by these to prvent the wind from lifting them.
On new roofs tingles are not nailed as dannyppp has said.But when working on old roofs the tingle is nailed to the lower batton and bent up over the slate.
