spot lights how do i get them to look neat

Hi ALL I HAVE HAD A LOFT EXTENTION AND EVEN THOUGH THE CEILING HAS BEEN PLASTERD THE SPOT LIGHTS DO NOT FIT FLUSH WHERE THE PLASTER IS SLIGHTLY UN EVEN SO WHEN I HAVE USED MAT WHITE PAINT ON THE CEILING THE SPOT LIGHTS HAVE SHADOWS ARROUND THEM WHERE THERE IS A SLIGHT GAP HAVE BEEN SUGESTED TO USE PAINTERS MATE BUT I AM NOT SURE OF THIS PRODUCT ALSO THE LIGHTS GET EXTREAMLY HOT SO DO NOT WANT TO HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE HEAT CHEERS gARY 29

Remove the lights and make the plaster in the surrounding area even by rubbing with sandpaper round a flat wood block, repaint the ceiling ,refit the lights.
