Concrete Blocks or Wood beams

by CHARLIEDELTA » Tue Feb 10, 2009 4:34 pm

Hi, I am currently renovating an old barn, and the architect has told me to put in a concrete floor for my first floor level as this helps tie the building together. However i would prefer traditional oak beams with a wooden floor on top. What are the benefits to doing in concrete or wood?......Surely the wooden beams will help tie the building together also....

Thank you for any help with this matter

CHARLIEDELTA,
If you are building a complete new masonry structure inside the existing then a concrete floor would be sensible. If the internal structure is timber I would go with your thoughts and use wood.

I really think it would be a good idea to trust what your architect is saying rather than asking for speculation here on something we can't see.

I'm sure a sensible discussion with him about your concern will yield dividends. Alternatively find another architect who agrees with you.
